The Legal Aid Society–Employment Law Center is a nonprofit, legal services organization assisting California’s low-income working families for more than 90 years.
While our staff and Board of Directors have diverse backgrounds and experience, we share a common purpose: to protect the legal rights of low-wage earners. We believe that stable working conditions and a living wage strengthen families and communities. We help those who are most at risk of poverty to avoid the downward spiral that can come from losing a job.
The LAS–ELC helps people protect their workplace rights regardless of their ability to pay. Our work is supported by charitable contributions, foundation grants, the Legal Services Trust Fund, and court awarded attorneys’ fees. We are not recipients of Legal Services Corporation funds.
Volunteers provide essential support that enables us to take cases we would otherwise be unable to accept. We welcome and depend on the pro bono engagement of private law firms and individual attorneys, student law clerks, and those new to the practice of law. And we sponsor fellowships for law students and new lawyers interested in gaining experience in public interest law.
