Tell Governor Brown to Protect DV Survivors’ Jobs and Safety at Work!
Governor Brown needs to hear from you today about an important bill.
SB 400 (Jackson) would prohibit employers from firing an employee based on his or her status as a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking, and would require employers to provide reasonable safety accommodations to survivors at work. This bill is now on the governor’s desk.
- Survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking face staggering rates of job loss, which jeopardizes their economic security and their ability to escape an abusive relationship.
- California law allows victims job-protected time off to obtain court relief or other assistance, but does not prevent employers from terminating a victim based on his or her status, and does not entitle victims to safety measures at work. SB 400 will help protect the safety and economic independence of survivors.
- SB 400 is co-sponsored by the Legal Aid Society–Employment Law Center, the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence, and the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault, and is supported by a broad coalition of women’s, labor and civil rights groups, law enforcement, and employers. This bill has no opposition.
