Last Friday Governor Brown signed into law AB 1579, the Healthy Babies Act (Stone), which will allow pregnant women to obtain CalWORKs benefits in the second trimester of pregnancy instead of limiting access to the third trimester. Previously, women without other children at home who were struggling financially but more than three months from their due date were ineligible for CalWORKS, the state’s welfare program for low-income families.

Today, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the trial court’s ruling that Sweetwater Union High School District is out of compliance with Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments, which bars sex discrimination in education, including athletic programs. By affirming the lower court’s decision, the Ninth Circuit ensured that girls at Castle Park High School will finally be given the equal access to athletics that they deserve.
