Tell Governor Brown to Strengthen Paid Family Leave!
Governor Brown needs to hear from you today about an important bill.
SB 770 (Jackson) would expand the definition of family within California’s Paid Family Leave law to allow workers to receive partial pay while taking leave to care for a seriously ill sibling, grandparent, grandchild, or parent-in-law. This bill is now on the governor’s desk.
- California’s PFL program allows workers to receive partial pay while bonding with a new child or caring for a seriously ill family member. The program is paid for entirely by employees through payroll deductions and is a lifeline for workers and their families. But the law’s definition of family is far too narrow, which prevents many workers from accessing the benefits even when a close loved one has a life-threatening illness. SB 770 will help ensure that workers do not have to choose between a paycheck and caring for their families.
- SB 770 is sponsored by the Legal Aid Society–Employment Law Center, and supported by the California Work & Family Coalition. This bill has no opposition.
